Running In Circles: Trust Issues? The MOST Important Thing To Know

Trust issues?

I found a new running route recently.

I took a last-minute detour, thinking "I wonder what's down that way".

Now, that might seem trivial. But it wasn't some years ago.

When I started running, I used to run around the same block of houses, over and over.

I loved the after-run feeling. And I felt much healthier for doing it regularly.

But I hated running.

Still, I forced myself. And so struggled to be consistent.

What I didn't see until years later was that I didn't actually hate running. I disliked the lack of variety.

As strange as it sounds:

I'd been (literally) running around in circles out of fear.

Fear I'd get lost.

Fear I'd get tired and have to walk back.

Even fear I wouldn't run far enough. (So I wouldn't be as healthy).

Fear it'd go wrong somehow if I decided to break my regular pattern.

Bottom line? I didn't trust myself.

I didn't trust I'd be able to work it out. I didn't trust myself I could handle the uncertainty. The unknown.

A part of us clings to certainty because it seems safer. But too much can keep us stuck.

Through working with others and reflecting on my own journey, I've come to learn this:

Trust in ourselves - in our abilities, our decision-making, our intuition - is one of the most powerful things we can learn when it comes to weathering life's challenges.

We can't necessarily control the things around us. But we can learn to trust ourselves in being able to deal them.

(Even when we don't know exactly how just yet).

What are you not trusting yourself to handle?
