Is Capitalism Destroying Mental Health? A critique of James Davies' 'Sedated'
/What if you're not broken or mentally unwell? What if it really is 'the system'?
In his book 'Sedated', researcher, lecturer, and psychotherapist James Davies points the finger squarely at our current economic structure as the cause of the Western Mental Health Crisis.
Neoliberal Free-Market Capitalism, Davies argues, favours growth, efficiency, and profit over wellbeing. And in doing so, is inherently unstable. This insecurity ultimately leads to higher rates of anxiety, burnout, and depression. Worse still, he argues the main goal of our Mental Health Services isn't actually recovery, but instead a swift 'return to work'.
I explore these ideas in more depth in a 15-minute talk I gave recently, discussing Davies' key points, how we got here, and some crucial alternative perspectives.
